The importance of harvest meals

Filed Under: America's Farm Table, Family Values Tagged With: cooking, family farm, farming, growing crops 2 Comments

If you’re not from a farm, you might not know “harvest meals.” But let me take you back to what was a century ago with real-life memories of harvest meals from my 111 year-old great-aunt Iris. Through the pictures I’ve shared below you will see modern-day agriculture where farms are still run by families who need to eat when they…

What if your farm or small town disappeared?

Filed Under: America's Farm Table, Life in North Dakota Tagged With: family farm, farming, prairie life, rural life, small town sports 2 Comments

What if your farm or small town disappeared? If you wanted to show your grandkids where you grew up, would the house still be standing? What about your school and church—those places that gave you roots during your developmental years? One Saturday not too long ago, my mother-in-law, Carol, had the idea to take a road trip to Kulm, N.D….

Communities help raise your kids

Filed Under: Family Values, Motivated Moms Tagged With: family, kids, motherhood Leave a Comment

Harvested grain fields signal kids are heading back to school in our rural communities. Some years I want to drag out the summer fun a bit longer. This year, though, I’m embracing a new school year and more grateful we can celebrate the academic highlight. Our son is starting his freshman year at the University of North Dakota. Our daughters will…

Making it in motherhood

Filed Under: Motivated Moms Tagged With: being a mom, motherhood, working mom 2 Comments

I feel like I made it in motherhood. Do you know the feeling? I’ve crossed a line today on our son’s 19th birthday. This year, our son is at the University of North Dakota, beginning a new chapter of his education. I’m less sentimental than I thought I would be. He’s ready. I didn’t buy him the necessary school supplies; he’s…

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: rural life, sharing your voice, working mom 2 Comments

I don’t know how this happened but all 31 days of July have wrapped! I have less than an hour before it is midnight and suddenly August hits me. In some ways July was long. I can tell you about each week and what the big topic of the week was just by mentally rolling through it. I have thousands…

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
