Smoky Maple Bacon & Beef n’ Bean Recipe

It’s picnic and barbecue season and with that comes beans as one of our family’s favorite side dishes. I put this four bean or sometimes five bean recipe together ahead of time in the slow cooker and then it is ready for either a noon picnic, afternoon barbecue or evening supper. A social media friend told me her family calls…

Eclipse on the North Dakota prairie

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: prairie life 5 Comments

The North Dakota prairie gave us a beautiful sunset tonight with the annular solar eclipse. Hunter was driving. Yes, he drives now. I was a passenger with my Canon Rebel in the center console of the vehicle. He said, “Mom, you want me to pull over right?” We pulled over to take in the beauty. These two captures don’t do…

From the voice of a North Dakota dairy farmer

Filed Under: America's Farm Table, Family Values, Life in North Dakota Tagged With: agriculture, dairy, family, family farm, North Dakota, rural life 19 Comments

This week, through my work with state government, I left the Capitol, meetings, emails, conference calls and more to spend a morning in my favorite work environment, a local farm. I was simply filling a request for some pictures of a dairy farmer that lives near us. I can actually see the dairy from our house despite it being a…

Don’t throw dirt

Filed Under: America's Farm Table, Family Values Tagged With: agriculture, family fun, gardening, growing crops 4 Comments

Miss E was planting “her” garden the other night with pink petunias and white and purple pansies. She was mess making but happy as can be in the dirt. As I snapped a photo, Miss A walked into the…

They made me a mother. Anika, Hunter and Elizabeth with me after church today. It’s been a journey, motherhood. Each has their own story. Mine is like many, twists and turns, ups and downs but full of blessings.  I learned to be a mother from my mom, grandmas and great-grandma. I also learned to be a mom from others moms…

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
