I am not a farm widow

Filed Under: America's Farm Table Tagged With: family farm, farming, marriage, small business owners 9 Comments

I’m not a farm widow. This time of year when the tractors and planters start rolling in our area farm fields I start hearing from a few lonely spouses and the “farm widow” chatter starts picking up on social media. “Farm widow” refers to a spouse, often a wife, left at home while her farmer-husband is planting from dawn to well…

A small-town music concert for all

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: music, rural life, small town Leave a Comment

As our son’s high school years come to an end this month, I am still trying to remember and document the moments and memories. Last month our school held a small-town music concert, featuring the junior high and high school choir and band. In order to be in music in our school, you give up a study hall. These kids…

Filling in the small town gaps

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: North Dakota, rural life Leave a Comment

I am speaking today in Bismarck, North Dakota at the Ignite Legendary Leaders conference and sharing below my most recent weekly column. It ties into my speaking topic of Building Engagement, Online and Offline. When we moved to our small town and rural county it was the most elderly per capita county in the U.S. I was pregnant—and thought we…

Emotional mom of a high school senior

Any emotional parents out there as they turn a page in the book of parenthood? Raising my hand! I have purposely tried to document our son’s senior year on my blog and in social media more than in past high school years. My Facebook, Instagram checking and blog reading grandparents are my main audience along with other family members not able…

Mother-in-law birthday love and appreciation

Filed Under: Family Values Tagged With: birthdays, family, milestones, motherhood, working mom 1 Comment

Today is my mother-in-law’s birthday. Carol and I became “neighbors” when Nathan and I moved into she and my father-in-law’s basement in July 2007. It was only for a few days before we moved into our rental house and a time of transition. Nathan had left his corporate job at the end of June that year. We walked away from a solid…

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
