The Case for Kids to Participate in FFA, 4-H and Science Fairs

Filed Under: America's Farm Table Tagged With: agriculture, kids, rural life 1 Comment

More than half of Americans consider themselves sports fans—they pack stadiums, rearrange their schedules to catch the game on TV, set alerts on their smartphones to track scores and host parties to watch the big matchups. But who follows science fairs, FFA or 4-H events with the same intensity? As a second-generation college athlete and a mom of a three-sport (and…

Sharing the love

Filed Under: Family Values Tagged With: kids, prairie life 2 Comments

Before we sat down for brunch today at our house we had a less than two minute photo shoot together. First the kids…can you feel the love? Hunter hammed it up to get done so he could get to his pancakes, eggs and bacon. Then Elizabeth snapped pictures on my big camera of Nathan and me. Hunter took pictures on my…

School program sweetness and creating memories

Filed Under: Family Values Tagged With: prairie life, rural life Leave a Comment

We have a  sweet second-grader in our home. She’s sincere, sensitive, thoughtful and cares for others more than any other child I have known. She is Miss E. Today we went to Miss E’s second-grade program where her music teacher Mrs. Wolff combined Valentine’s Day and President’s Day into one celebration of songs and every student had multiple lines.I see…

The welcome wagon of a small town

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: North Dakota, prairie life, rural life 4 Comments

Small towns are quaint and enjoy a slower pace of life but are they welcoming? Nine years ago, my husband, son and I moved from the south suburbia area of Fargo to Wishek, a small North Dakota town 97 miles from a Target or Starbuck’s. Wishek was my husband’s hometown and people stopped to welcome him home.I’m a lifelong North…

A full circle National Signing Day

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: kids, North Dakota, rural life, small town sports Leave a Comment

This morning, our son, Hunter signed his National Letter of Intent to play football at the University of North Dakota. For many close friends, family and community supporters, Hunter choosing football over college basketball came as a surprise last summer when he committed to UND. But to our family, it was not as much of a surprise as it was meant…

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
