Camping & fishing

Late tonight when I step off the airplane after a whirlwind of business travel this week, I won’t drive home. Instead I will weave across the prairie to find my family nestled away in a bay along the Missouri River. Camping and fishing are two summer activities that my husband loves. He grew up doing both and our kids will have similar life experiences, skills and memories.
We have not camped and fished together since I was pregnant with Miss E but by the sounds of it everyone is ready to go for our family camping and fishing debut. Thanks to Nathan setting up and taking care of details this week plus my mom visiting to organize and pack for the kids. (Yes they are both amazingly wonderful.)
Last weekend we went on a family boat ride and dusted off the fishing poles. But this is real summer kick off of the Pinke family camping and fishing summer excursions.
Elissa is told me on the phone tonight that I need to make pancakes when am done with my “meeting in the sky” (she knows I have been on an airplane this week) and join the camping fun. Nathan reassured me he has all ingredients packed and ready to go so I can make pancakes!
Hunter will fish with Nathan and Gpa Eldon this weekend. He might have a bigger smile by Sunday if he catches a few big walleye!
Nathan is all smiles when he is on the water, preferably catching fish. Last weekend they got six lines into the water including Elissa’s new Barbie fishing pole and she said to her daddy, “Okay, now what do we do?”
She might like have patience for fishing like me.
Anika and I will lay low this weekend and take plenty of naps. I can camp often as long as I have a cozy bed, a roof over my head, a hot shower, a stove and air conditioning.  I might be the only mom in America getting off the plane and driving straight to the river for a weekend of camping on the prairie.
The stark contrast of going from a business presentation in St. Louis to making pancakes over an open fire while camping on the prairie with my family is exactly what makes my life full of excitement and fun. It brings balance to my life as a working mommy wife!
I am sure we will return from the weekend with a few classic fishing and camping stories to share!

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
