Brutal cold science experiment

This morning it is -31F. Yes below zero. It is brutal cold. But our hearty son was out on the deck before 7AM doing a science experiment. (I told him to at least put on his hat and boots…he said I should NOT worry and that he would be quick.)
Hunter boiled water in the microwave, put it into my insulated coffee mug and ran out to the deck.
He tossed the extremely hot water into the extremely cold air and the water instantly turned to powder.
Thanks to Auntie Dr. Lori for giving Hunter the tip that it is cold enough right now to do this experiment. He did it twice last night and three times this morning.
It might be painfully cold but we are enjoying it in 30 second science experiment increments!

This post reminded me of one of Grandpa Sonny’s favorite jokes:
“It’s so cold that when I threw a pan of hot water out the door, it instantly turned to ice. I went over to pick it up and it was still hot!”
Not exactly scientific, but I had more than one friend bite on it when I was Hunter’s age!

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
