Some of you know the story of how I met my husband. It is a modern day fairy tale in our minds and I won’t retell it all right now. We met while traveling. The night we met out in Kansas City, we sat and talked for a few hours. He discreetly asked me a few “key” questions he and his college buddies had established as “requirements” for a future mate. One was “do you like dogs?”. Yes of course I like dogs. We have had golden and yellow labs at our farm my entire life along with some smelly cow dogs. The following week Nathan drove to Fargo where I was living and picked me up for our first official date. Again in our after dinner conversation Nathan talked about dogs and specifically his dog or as I came to learn Nathan’s dog child, Charlie. Jump ahead to our pre-martial counseling and even the message at our wedding, Charlie was a topic. Charlie is not a farm dog like those I was used to. He is a dog child that Nathan raised from a puppy when he was a lone bachelor. As Nathan’s work travel increased Charlie started to visit Nathan’s parents house and eventually became a permanent resident. However C-dog and Nathan are forever bonded and there is a general joint custody agreement between Gma Carol and Nathan to share the dog child. I have even made agreements that Charlie can be designated areas of our home. That is a big step for a farm girl used to farm dogs. When Elizabeth was born, Charlie loving our baby was very important to Nathan. Not to worry, they are bonded as you can see by the below pictures.
Elissa goes to play with Gma Carol a couple days a week. She has learned to play “ball” with Charlie who she simply calls “dog”. She also has him trained to do tricks and gives him “treeeets“.
