Always a lady: Happy Birthday Grandma Nola!

Filed Under: Family Values Tagged With: family, family farm 4 Comments

You might not notice her in a crowd. She is petite and quiet. But my beautiful Grandma Nola is the definition of a lady to me. She has worked tirelessly on our family farm for decades, behind the scenes, managing a household, cooking and baking like no one else I know, an amazing seamstress, raising five successful kids and being…

Purchase a 2014 On The Prairie Calendar

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: North Dakota, prairie life 4 Comments

“The rawness of a sun-kissed North Dakota prairie orchestrates my day. In the still of the early morning, my eyes scan the east for the first hint of the gentle canary rays. At the end of the day, my eyes are drawn westward to behold the fiery ring explode into the horizon. For those fleeting minutes, I stop and…

Reflecting on a Birthday Girl: Miss E is Six Years Old!

Filed Under: Family Values Tagged With: family, motherhood 3 Comments

Today Miss E is six years old. She was “born” on this blog and I tracked her every move since birth. Her official name is Elizabeth Carolyn Jane. Her nickname is Elissa at home but she decided in preschool last year she would go by Elizabeth in school. Her younger sister calls her Lizzie sometimes and she doesn’t mind. And…

Six years ago today I was a bit lonely on the North Dakota prairie. I was  nine months pregnant and nervous about having a baby at a hospital 100 miles away in a frigid December. Six months earlier, my husband had jumped off the corporate wheel, leaving the comforts of a cushy paycheck and benefits in his sales management position….

The Boy That Warms Up Winter

Filed Under: Family Values, Life in North Dakota Tagged With: family, family fun, North Dakota, prairie life Leave a Comment

I will be the first to admit I have done my fair share of complaining about winter weather in North Dakota. My mom told me as a child that God accidentally put me in the wrong family. What reassuring words. Actually, she said I belonged on a California beach instead of the frozen tundra in North Dakota. I was stuck…

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
