Wordless Wednesday w/ linky: Farm Fresh Tour

Filed Under: America's Farm Table, Family Values Tagged With: agriculture, family, family farm 11 Comments

Better late than never? This was ready to go yesterday but scheduling, internet issues and lack of sleep got in my way. Regardless, I still have a linky below for any late comers to WW like I am today!
I am just going to show you snapshots of an amazing weekend I experienced while working on behalf of client, Know A California Farmer as we toured a couple large family farms in and around Carmel, California. Over the next couple weeks I am going to share specific stories of things I learned about lettuce farming, farm laborers, organic versus conventional farming, strawberry farming and more. I was alongside colleagues, food bloggers, parenting bloggers, farmers…and I call them all friends after this past weekend. Many of them are also blogging about this tour. As I post over the next few weeks about the tour, I will include their links and background.

My friend, Nancy aka Wife of a Dairyman shares on her blog today about the tour. She drove 3 hours to stay with me and attend the tour.

I ate grilled lettuce for the first time in my life which had just been freshly harvested. Truly awesome! Chef John of FoodWishes, the most popular video food blogger in the world, shared yesterday on his blog about how to grill the lettuce and great detail of the tour.

Ever had an egg on your pizza? I have now and it was yummy. And I also figured out how to connect an almond farmer in the middle of harvest to food bloggers. Brent of 4G Farms connected via iPads with the bloggers over our lunch at Tanimura and Antle Farms.

Nancy told her story of her husband’s 5th generation family dairy north of San Francisco, raising their kids on the farm and why she started blogging. Now she calls herself a social media addict and I am so glad she is because that’s how we became dear friends

Certified organic or conventionally raise strawberries? Does it matter to you? We listened to a fabulous farmer, Tom of Naturipe, who taught me more than I could ever dream of knowing and he raises both organic and conventionally raised strawberries. After listening to him, I support both practices and understand more depth of the “whys” behind raising specialty crops like strawberries.

Before heading home, Jay Baer, a top recognized social media strategist and someone I’ve worked with for the past two years along with the bloggers and our team wrapped up on our thoughts.

I went through security in San Jose at 5:40AM PST on September 11, 2011 to fly home to the prairie. At 5:46 AM PST, 10 years after the tragedy of 9/11, the San Jose airport stopped. We stood in silence for three minutes, saluted and then sang the National Anthem. It’s a moment that still fills my eyes with tears even as I type about it.
As I boarded my plane home I thought about the Farm Fresh Tour, the people I had met and the freedom I am grateful for every day in America. Farming. Food. Freedom…three things I probably take for granted but was vividly reminded of the importance of last weekend.
Time to share your Wordless or Wordy Wednesday. Link up and share a photo(s) and maybe a story if you’d like. Be sure to visit the others linked up below. Yes, I know I need a button for my Pinke Post WW and my friend Brooke has even made one. Maybe next week I’ll be organized to get it on here. For now, please link up…very late in the WW party.
Linking up…late to a few favorite WW blogger friends:

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
