Our small town wind tower drama

Today in the Bismarck Tribune you can read about our neighbor’s drama over a wind tower they put up in their yard. It is half the height of our high school football field lights and certainly not distracting or obtrusive in our minds. We can hear the humming sound from our deck but it does not bother us. I look out several times a day at the wind tower because as you can see we do not have trees to see if it is windy or not. Our quiet little town on prairie is very rural. Desolate actually. And we never make news headlines! But making headlines over a wind tower is appropriate. It is windy here a majority of the time. Truthfully I want a wind tower for our yard. It seems like a right fit in our windy county. With sarcasm dripping from his voice, Nathan said if we magically have an extra $10,000 of disposable money laying around we can put up one ourselves, just outside of the city property lines to avoid conflict and fines. Yes the disposable money part is the hang up for us! It is not happening anytime during our child rearing years for sure.
There are huge commercial wind towers up across fields in our area which I have shown you here. They create tremendous revenue for area farmers, counties and school districts. But putting a small turbine up in a city is a no-no. This will be the “hot topic” over many cups of coffee on the prairie today and for weeks to come!

    Uffda.
The city council needs to get their priorities strait. Taking down stop signs and hassling people about a wind tower shouldn’t even be on their radar.
But, I love that we can see your house on the Tribune’s photo! 🙂

Not only did your neighbors make the paper, but so did your house.

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
