Blizzard & Stomach Flu= Christmas Decorating

No blizzard pictures. No stomach flu pictures. We did indeed spend a weekend at home, hunkered down for waiting for the forecasted blizzard to hit and dealing with the ongoing stomach flu saga. Elizabeth went straight from the flu to a horrendous ear/throat/ nose yucky cold. Her daddy took her to the doctor on Friday while I was sick in bed. Hunter thought he had been spared. Not so. Saturday afternoon the flu bug got him. While Hunter slept, Elizabeth and I decorated our first Christmas tree in our new home. Daddy and Grandpa Eldon worked on building our mantle for the fireplace so we can hang our stockings. It was fun to dig out the Christmas decorations which many have been packed up for a couple years. Last year we had a “minimal” Christmas aka tiny house, new baby. Our collection of ornaments range from homemade from Hunter (see above) to handmade by my friend Holly (see below). Numerous ornaments from the Millette’s, handmade by family members, ornaments from my childhood, wedding gifts, plus those bargain first ornaments I bought to decorate a tree in college. When I dug them all out yesterday, it was an afternoon of recollecting as I put them on the tree…and Elizabeth took them off the tree. Ah yes a one year old and a Christmas tree. You can buy Holly’s ornaments here

(with annoying cords, hanging out from the side of it that need to be adjusted but still we love it)
When Hunter was well enough to come downstairs last night and watch the last hour of “It’s a Wonderful Life” with Nathan and me, he said “Hey that was suppose to be my job”, referring to decorating the tree. Next year we will aim to all be healthy on the same day, on a blizzardy day with a cozy fire burning in the fireplace and all decorate the tree together. A memory waiting to happen.

The blizzard did hit. Sub zero temperatures and wind chills. Enough snow for Nathan to get out the snow blower this afternoon. The wind is still blowing now. Hunter is hopeful school will be delayed two hours or cancelled all together tomorrow. Two hours late is most likely for buses to get out for the “country kids” as Hunter refers to them. Farm kids. He is such a city kid…in a town of 1200 people. He gave me instruction to turn off his alarm before it goes off if school is delayed so he can sleep in until 8AM.

I was wondering if you were hunkered down in blizzard weather! Glad the snow belt finally got some snow! and hope you are all feeling better

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
