How to make a pillowcase dress for beginners

Filed Under: Motivated Moms Tagged With: frugal, homemade, pillowcase dress 10 Comments

Homemade clothes at our house are sewn by my mom for her two favorite models, Miss A and Miss E. Her newest creations are modern pillowcase dresses. Rather than make them from old pillowcases she made her own updated pattern and style using bright fabric combinations. Now I am not a sewing mom but I think my mom can teach anyone so over the next few days you can follow her tutorials…

and learn step by step how to make pillowcase dresses for even a beginner. Miss A and Miss E are wearing their pillowcase styled dresses with matching capri pants this spring. I’m still suffering from lack of my main personal computer and photography so these are snapshots from my phone that I had uploaded to Instagram.

Smiling girls in their homemade pillowcase dress outfits melt me and I’ll admit the price tag is great too. My mom gives these to the girls as gifts and it saves huge on our budget. Plus the girls are wearing originals from my mom which I used to have as a kid but had ZERO appreciation for as a young girl. I wanted name brand clothes, not homemade clothes. But my appreciation has soared with age. I love my mom’s original pillowcase dresses made with creativity and love.
Did you have homemade clothes as a child? Do you do any sewing today?

Lovely! What bright and cheery fabrics! I made some for my daughter last summer that she grew out of way too quickly, thank goodness she can wear them as a shirt for a couple more years 🙂

I love to sew, but don’t have 2 pretty little girls to sew for! FYI – the links are not working, not sure what that is about?!?

Isn’t it amazing what we appreciate as we grow older?
I can sew a button on. But I know that’s not what you meant.
    I want to learn. :o)

Our mom used to make coordinating dresses for her four daughters. I, too, did not appreciate it enough. She has been gone 26 years, and I still miss her. Yes, I do sew, but not as good as my mom did. Nice job, Jane!

What adorable pillowcase dresses. I grew up wearing homemade clothes that either my mom or aunts made as I was the last of the girls cousins and got all of thier hand me downs. I sewed for my daughter and sons as they were growing up and now am doing sewing for my grand daughters. My daughter is now sewing for her own daughter as I taught her to sew and she made plenty of outfits for 4-H fashion revue and I am glad that she is now putting that skill to work.

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
