Local find amongst prairie Spring happenings

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: North Dakota, prairie, rural life, spring 8 Comments

I found a local find that was made for me today on the first day of Spring. Through my work, I attended the Pride of Dakota Day (a program that includes 500 small businesses making North Dakota products) at the State Capitol. It was a North Dakota necklace that jumped out at me amongst tables of companies displaying and showcasing their products. It has charms on it that remind me of my roots and my present day. I’ll be wearing it for years to come on the prairie.

A few other prairie moments of recent include…

some of my favorite kids singing in front of church. For anyone that worries about the next generation or lack there of in rural America, come visit my husband and me on Sunday mornings. In the most elderly per capita county in the nation, we have 19 different children ages 2-5 that have attended Sunday School with us this year.

Our church only has 100 people in it. The fact there are 19 little kids willing to come participate at our church gives me hope of a future for rural America. We have to work on opportunities to keep them here but at least they are passionately involved now, singing their hearts out in church. I should also add that the sweet Miss A in the red dress above JUMPED from her perch in front of the church, down two steps, landed on her feet, turned around and went up to sing the next song. It’s never dull.

Another sight to see on the prairie right now is truly a real Spring! The first official day of Spring usually means nothing to us as we still often are piled in amongst snowbanks on the prairie in March. But this year we have lilac bush buds. Our tree rows were planted three years ago this Spring and to see them thriving and budding renews me.

What’s a typical week around our house with out too much good food to eat? Awfully boring. Our Spring kick off is no different. We don’t lack thankfully. My mother-in-law brought over a fresh apple pie and a fresh sour cream and raisin pie for us all to taste…and inhale. A fresh breeze was blowing through our screen door. Pie on the prairie with fresh Spring breeze can’t be beat.

How are you kicking off Spring?

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
