Planning Valentine’s Day recipes & a meal

While I don’t think all the hoopla of Valentine’s Day is always necessary, it is a good day to give a few extra hugs and kisses and share some good food together. I was thinking ahead today that Valentine’s Day on Tuesday this upcoming week is going to be hectic because of Hunter’s local Science Fair. We’ll have to share our Valentine’s family meal probably on Wednesday instead together.

What to make to please a family of kids ages 2, 4 and 14 along with steak loving husband?

Sweet tooth ideas first. We discovered our love for Valentine’s Cake Pops last year. Auntie Lori made them and sent them to us.  If you don’t know how to make cake balls or cake pops, Bakerella can teach you how.

Last year for a new dessert at Valentine’s Day, I made Almost Famous Chocolate Molten Cake from a Food Network recipe. I am going to make it again this year as a special treat for my sweet tooth chocolate loving family.

I learned I could win my husband’s heart quite easily with a properly grilled steak. Grilling up ribeyes will be on the menu.

My blog post here features how to grill steaks. A medium rare steak is my easy Valentine’s meal foundation.
Just to add a cozy winter favorite to our Valentine’s Day meal, I’ll make Chicken Wild Rice Soup. This is a classic Marshall Field’s cookbook recipe I make. It can be made ahead of time in a slow cooker and finished right before serving.
In case there is any question if I will have help in the kitchen…

Miss A is honing her cooking skills today in the kitchen with my mom. I have the weekend off from cooking. My mom is cooking for us! My parents are here for our boy’s basketball team district tournament. Today my mom made a feast of Spanish Steak, mashed potatoes, green beans, cole slaw and a platter of cakes and cookies. Nana and Grandpa Eldon, my husband’s parents and my brother Robbie joined us. Tonight we’ll all be at the game cheering on our Mustangs in the 3rd place game. We lost a hard game last night to the top team in the district and are hoping for a win tonight!

And there is just a little bit of intensity around the house right now. Along with a win tonight, I think Valentine’s steak and chocolate molten cake will definitely have him smiling in the new week.
Do you “celebrate” Valentine’s Day with a special outing or meal?

I made a chocolate cake with strawberry frosting. Not nearly as cute as your cake pops!

Good luck to Hunter. No special plans this year. I have been helping my daughter with Valentine school projects though!

I made my cookie pops last weekend, so no special desserts this weekend — hubby will be back traveling up your way for work tomorrow. I love Bakerella’s site. Your fixin’s above look yummy! 🙂

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
