Snow: Old Man Winter’s sense of humor?

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: North Dakota, North Dakota weather, prairie life, winter 8 Comments

Breaking news from the North Dakota prairie: It’s snowing.

Old Man Winter has a sense of humor on the prairie. But we don’t think he’s very funny anymore. He’s like that guy at work that tells the same obnoxious joke repeatedly every time you see him. It’s like nails on the chalkboard on the last day of April.

 But really? C’mon.
It’s snowing.

Instead of blooms, blossoms, planting and seeding happening, there are forecasted 70 mph wind gusts with snow.
We are running for cover, building a fire and settling in for a blizzard. Old Man Winter’s sense of humor is not amusing. Hiding behind a camera and blogging can’t hide my disappointment. I can’t watch anymore Royal Wedding coverage on BBC America while folding clothes to ignore this stuff out the window.
It’s downright depressing.
But we have electricity and warm home with a roof over our heads unlike those in the southern United States who are recovering from storms. And compared to billions globally, we are well fed and nourished. We are healthy and blessed. I know I shouldn’t be complaining. So we’ll take this all in stride.

Spring snow…again.

Share a slice of your Spring Saturday…please. Blooms? Blossoms? Planting your garden? Mowing your lawn? Seeding your fields? I need to hear about it. Please.

True. The plight of so many others – even in our own country – puts things in perspective. I know you’re tired of winter, but that’s what makes Northern folks so tough. 🙂

Ahhh, Mother Nature! Gotta love her right? We had a fantastic Spring day here in Central Illinois. Planted wave petunias (my lazy gardner way of ensuring beautiful flowers comes July) and spent most of the day hiking in a local State Park. Still no field activity but hoping planting can get started soon!

While it is not snowing here, would gladly trade for some. Been too dry here in New Mexico for too long. Some of my garden is planted, at least the early spring stuff. The husband and crew is gathering the herd today to pull out the heifers and put the bulls with the girls for the summer. Hope that the day improves and the snow lifts.

So not happy when I woke up to find snow on the ground! Are we ever going to have spring?

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
