If you love Pioneer Woman’s recipes like me and are married to an outdoorsman like me, you might be interested in my step by step tutorial on cooking over a campfire using cast iron.
This is for a steak sandwich that is not only Malboro Man’s favorite sandwich but one of my husband’s favorites also.
Get your fire going early so it can die down and create hot, ashy coals to cook. I learned a husband and a father-in-law are very good resources to have to build your fire.
Have some quality cast-iron cookware ready to go. This set is most appropriate for us.
Follow Pioneer Woman’s recipes only everything is over the camp fire. Do not forego the important step of use “lots of butter”. Yes lots of it.
If your fire isn’t getting enough air movement from the trees, resort to your husband getting a floor fan and an extension cord to help the fire cook your onions.
I used sliced boneless sirloin tip for the meat from my local butcher. He sliced it for me. Tenderizer it.
The seasonings are key. Sunny Spain is Penzey’s salt-free lemon pepper and a wonderful staple in my spice cupboard. Fresh ground pepper is best but if you are camping…use what you have like I did.
Our one and only local grocery store makes sub bread on a daily basis. I cut it in half, butter and toast for the bread. Except this time, we didn’t toast the bread. Do what you need to do when camping.
Combine the cooked steak and cooked onions. Place the mixture onto each sandwich. I recommend using some of the yummy juice too. It’s my favorite part. I top it all with a slice of provolone cheese.
Enjoy. Now you are no longer a cast-iron cooking over a camp fire dummy. Eat up the sandwiches. They are sure to be a favorite.
