Where & how to find coveted kuchen

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: North Dakota, prairie, prairie life, rural life 6 Comments

Kuchen. Do you what it is? I didn’t until I married into a staunch German heritage family. My husband is the 3rd generation in the United States but the German traditions live strong in our corner of the prairie. One of those traditions is kuchen.  This weekend, Miss E and I set out to the county fair on Saturday afternoon…

It’s Friday Farm Girl Fair Time

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota, Small Town Living Tagged With: county fair, family fun, Farmgirl Friday, prairie life 6 Comments

Our county fair started Thursday night and we are immersing ourselves in attending events at it through the weekend.  It makes me giddy with excitement.  It’s not from the years of experience I’ve had at the fair. I didn’t grow up showing animals or submitting 4-H projects to a local county fair. Despite generations before me blazing a trial of…

Food lessons learned from my vegetarian girlfriend

Filed Under: America's Farm Table Tagged With: agriculture, friendship, girlfriends, where my food comes from 12 Comments

My longtime girlfriend Laura picked me up at the airport in her hometown of Columbus, Ohio. I had a few hours before my colleague would arrive and we would drive that evening to our destination for the next day’s round of client related commitments. I was elated to finally have time to hang out with Laura on her home turf…

If you research Red Velvet Cake recipes you’ll find every man, woman and child has a similar version of the Waldorf Red Velvet recipe that was…

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
