Presence over presents for holiday shopping

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: christmas, rural life, small business owners, small business shopping Leave a Comment

Do you have the Black Friday ads in front of you, plotting the best shopping sales after Thanksgiving? Or, maybe you’re holding out for Cyber Monday deals. What about Small Business Saturday? It’s easy to get caught up in the first-world shopping headlines and buzz of the season and put more value on presents rather than presence. As a small-business…

Wishek’s Sauerkraut Day builds community

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: North Dakota, prairie life, rural life, working mom 2 Comments

In sea of political commentary this season which wanes on us all, I am avoiding it and going to share with you about small towns and sauerkraut of all things. Sauerkraut connects our community. Nothing can clear our minds and specifically our senses quite like fermented cabbage. Sauerkraut connects me every second Wednesday in October to my community, Wishek. Sauerkraut…

Trump, Clinton: my girls split their votes

Filed Under: Motivated Moms Tagged With: kids, motherhood 2 Comments

My daughters came home from school yesterday talking about their school’s mock election. I have kept the television off and their opinions of the Presidential election haven’t been influenced much by my husband and me. We’ve insulated and protected them, on purpose. While I’ll forever cherish harvest lunches and driving the grain truck as a (much too) young child under my grandpa and uncle’s guidance, the combine and tractor rides today have taken on new significance.     I’m not an active farmer or rancher, but I surround myself with…

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
