Voting in the most elderly county per capita in the USA

We live in the most elderly county per capita in the United States according to the US Census. It is a fact you should know about in my 30 Days of a North Dakota November. I live in an elderly, agriculture focused county. We have three little towns, no stop lights and less than 3,000 people. In between are vast fields of wheat, sunflowers, soybeans, corn, hay and beef cows with a couple of dairy farms.

There is a lot of gray hair around our county.

But our future is not bleak. We have a generation of mentors. And there is a next generation here to carry on tradition and success. We are apart of it. And today we casted our votes for our county, legislative, state and national elections. Nathan and I sat by one any other with our ballots. We voted the same for each candidate and measure. It’s not that we think alike on every issue. But we talk about the issues, the candidates and the impact on our family, business, local government, state, nation and even the world.

Casting our votes
We are living this life, in the most elderly per capita county in the nation, together. At 11:30AM this morning, there was no voting line and my ballot was the 197th cast with Nathan’s being 198th ballot. It gave me a sense of pride to cast that ballot in our small town. North Dakota makes headlines for oil and jobs. But we don’t make headlines for the space in between, for the next generation working daily to make a success on the land our ancestors broke.
The sunset tonight in our yard and I went outside to capture it to remember Election Day 2012. The sun goes down with election buzz but tomorrow when the election buzz is still making headlines, my husband will work alongside his father in the business they work to grow daily together. On the land that we love, in the most elderly county per capita in the nation, a next generation is working for our family, for our community, state and nation. We don’t make headlines.

But this is the life that we choose, the life that we love.

Did you cast your vote in the 2012 elections in the USA? Do you feel like your voice is heard?

That was an interestng bit of trivia to learn. The lines for us here in NYC were very very long and a lot of it was due to the storm and people having to vote in other places and it is a presidential year. I find when it isn’t a presidential election, I breeze in and out much quicker.

Love LOVE small town rural America and I choose to stay (altho we aren’t as small as your community – I’ve always wanted to be in a smaller town). Those gray haired folks have much to teach us if we just listen and you should be proud!!!

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
