Homemade Hot Chocolate Recipe

Filed Under: Drinks, Recipes 3 Comments

The weather has cooled. Winter is here on the North Dakota prairie whether we want it or not. The roads are clear. The snow has melted but it will be back. Snow. We have a cozy treat during the snowy prairie season. We also have this treat when we decorate for Christmas. I also serve this special drink at the Christmas party we have at our house.

It’s Hot Chocolate!

Here is the recipe I modified over the last few years after getting a recipe from my fantastic gourmet cook sister-in-law, Dr. Lori.

Richer hot chocolate, go for the whole milk. It’s my favorite. But if you are trying not to gain 5-7 lbs. like most average Americans during the holiday season you cut out a little fat with low fat or skim milk.

You need:
3 1/2 cups skim milk
1 cup cream
4 oz. bittersweet chocolate, chopped
4 oz. semi-sweet (or milk) chocolate, chopped
1 TBSP sugar (add more to taste if you’d like…I’m a sweet kinda girl)
2 tsp. vanilla extract
1/3 cup strong brewed coffee
4 cinnamon sticks

Heat the milk/ cream on stove top over medium heat. As it starts to simmer, remove from heat and add chopped chocolate and stir continuously until melted. Add additional ingredients of sugar, vanilla and coffee. Whisk and put back on stove top heat on low to warm again. Add cinnamon sticks and stir. Serve as prepared or throw in a marshmallow or two to finish.

You can come visit us for a cup of hot chocolate and you might even get a ride outside in the soon to arrive winter wonderland. But then come back inside for a warm up cup of hot chocolate.

What’s your favorite cozy warm-up treat?

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
