Even when things get broken…

Filed Under: Family Values, Motivated Moms Tagged With: being a mom, mommy guilt, motherhood, working mom 9 Comments

Do you ever feel broken? But are unsure of what the problem is? You have pain but don’t know the source of it? You think you need a recharge but don’t know where to find it?
I have felt a bit that way lately. Slightly broken, off center. Not sure of my direction always but knowing what needs to be done. Then this weekend the reality of broken hit me.

We had a long Saturday night of broken. Due to a spill off the monkey bars, Nathan and I spent the night in the emergency room with Miss E, waiting for an opening in an operating room for her to have surgery on her broken arm. We waited for six hours behind a curtained off area of the ER. I had plenty of time of reflection…when the morphine was working.

Just earlier in the day, Miss E had her friend “Princess” shooting pictures alongside her. Like mother, like daughter.

Leah of Beyer Beware drove 1000 miles from Indiana with her two kids, Boo and Princess to spend their fall break with us. I have taken off some time from work to be home and had family and friend fun adventures planned with our kids and the Beyer clan.
And we were just starting to do that with the kick off pheasant hunting, plans for the pumpkin patch and cooking up meals together. Leah and I were cooking a “spooky” meal for the kids, which I was going to blog about yesterday. It included Don’t be a chicken chili which Leah finished while I headed to the hospital with Nathan and Elizabeth. I had leftovers of the chili last night. It’s fantastic and a perfect fall recipe which Leah blogged here.
Instead of blogging, or a trip to the pumpkin patch yesterday, I was in the hospital still with Miss E and our friends were going to visit their family member in the hospital. Miss K stopped for a visit with her little sister Miss O and their parents. The friendly visit brightened Elizabeth’s morning after a tough night.

By late morning Sunday we were headed home from the hospital. None of us had slept much following a 2AM surgery, 4AM to our hospital room and some tough pain for Elizabeth. But Elizabeth learned root beer popsicles make things better. (And so does pain killer.)

In a flurry we had a few friends stop by with food and gifts, text messages and phone calls of good wishes for Elizabeth, more food from Leah like these Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins from Gal in the Middle, a hot meal from my mother-in-law and a visit with toys from my parents.

And even though Miss E still has a broken arm, I don’t feel as broken anymore. The broken bones jolted me. I needed to be reminded the outside worldly factors that we all get wrapped up into at some point or another aren’t the most important factors in my life. But being there for your family, in times of hurt, need and in times of joy, matter. Broken bones happen. And yet I found joy in being broken. It was the selflessness of family and friends that reminded me how much I have to be grateful for, every day, in good times and hard times. Even when things get broken.

Thanks for the birthday blog comments, Katie! My dad actually told me about this blog post because we had an ER run over the weekend, too (nothing serious). I hope your sweet girl feels better soon and that you all get some rest!

We went through this just earlier this year. Tough times, but these things always have a way of “waking us up” in life.

I am glad to see that last picture of her with her popsicle and smile. I am sure it jolted you. Funny how life’s plans can change on a dime. We plan and plan and then things happen we just have no control over. I forget simetimes that the “best laid plans”. Enjoy the rest of the visit with your friends.

The monkey bars……..I had an experience with the monkey bars too as a kid that ended up with a fall from the very top to landing on the cement face first, and then surgery and a broken nose from the fall. I hope Ms. E heals up quickly.

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
