North Dakota Sunset Sisters

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota Tagged With: North Dakota, prairie life, sunset 8 Comments

Last night the girls and I were outside cleaning up summer plants and getting ready for fall. Later this week a hard frost will visit our corner of the prairie. The girls both know I love to capture daily sunrise and sunset pictures. You might already know this because I think four of my last five blog posts have something to do with sunrises or sunsets. I promise I have other things to blog about but this time of year on the prairie the sun is captivating and maybe from our lack of moisture and extra sun this year it is even more breathtaking.

As I was ripping out plants, I looked up as Miss E shouted “Mama, I have your phone. Let’s go!” She took off on her bike toward the sun with my phone in hand. I ran inside the garage for my “real” camera and not just my phone.

In the 20 seconds I was gone, Miss E had stopped. She shouted, “Hey! Isn’t anyone else going to the sunset with me?”

Never fear. The little sister is always here. Miss A ran barefoot across the gravel to reach the sunset with Miss E.

And for that moment, my world stopped, alongside our neighbors drought stricken soybean field.

With the western sky and sunset as our backdrop, I was overcome with peace, joy and contentment, thanks to the sunset sisters.
Life is busy. Complicated. Full. But life is good. Life is really good.

What’s your favorite place to capture a sunset? (I think I found mine.)

So beautiful! I can see why you like to shoot it! Your daughters are precious and I love that they want in on the action! In NYC the sky is often hidden by buildings, but where I live on Long Island, I love to drive down to the beach, and the sunsets there are so beautiful. But, I think you have me beat as you daughters add even more beauty to the pictures.

First of all, thanks for the lovely sunset photos! Second, I, too, am fascinated by sunsets, and the other night, found myself chasing one down. Which means, it was beautiful, but when I tried to photograph it, I saw too many obstructions. I had to drive further and further out to find what I was looking for, and to find it before it dipped and disappeared. I was on a mission and I thought, “Are you crazy Roxane?” But I felt this voice from within rise up and say, “No, not at all. This wasn’t planned but it’s about the most sane thing you could be doing — heading toward God’s beautiful goodnight message. It was worth chasing it down. It really was. 🙂 Nice to know we have another thing in common. I have another friend who likes sunsets like I do, and now, I will think of you, too, when I see a really fabulous one. 🙂

Thank you for posting sunsets of my home town. It makes me homesick to see such beauty.

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
