Change does come with you. Each of us have to decide what we want to change and what we can tolerate living with daily. And if you sit back and complain with out a willingness to create change, we all suffer.
Change does not come in a silo. It takes a community to create change. Creating change starts with listening. Then you have to be willing to step out.
Buck the norm, the standard that previously has been set. When I think of bucking, I literally think of being bucked off my childhood horse, Princess. She scared me enough that I was terrified of riding horses for years. I wouldn’t get back on Princess or any other horse. Until finally, I put on my big girls boots at Bible camp, under peer pressure and I got back on a horse. I have never been bucked off again.
Creating change means that when you push to change a standard, you may get bucked to the ground and be terrified to try again. But you cannot quit.
Creating change doesn’t come easy. But it starts with you.
Listen, be willing to buck the norm with the risk of failing, and then present a solution to your challenge you want to change. There is not one solution. Your way is not the only way. That is where community comes in to create change.
We need many ideas, many voices, coming together for causes we care to change.
I have learned to be passionate about creating change for good with the help of a community surrounding me, supporting me and teaching me. I have learned to be kind while trying to create change, even when I want to scream.
There is a driving force behind why I want to create change. One of those reasons is a driving force on the football field these days. He made me a mother. The other two greet me with hugs and kisses daily.
I want the world to be a better place for my children. I want to create change so my kids can have a better shot at success in life. But I also want to give a foundation for success for an entire next generation, a generation that may not have an advocate working to create change daily for them.
Lately, my change I have been working on is to create change to the new USDA national school breakfast and lunch program. I have a son in school that is hungry and needs more calories. You can read more of my thoughts on school lunch solutions along with many other blog posts linked to it. But really it is not about my son. I am packing him healthy lunches. He is fed. This is about greater change for all children, for an entire system. You can connect with Sensible School Lunches which is created by a community working together to contact their elected officials and the USDA to create change together.
You might not care about school lunches. That might not be your cause. You might give me the eye roll.
That is okay by me as long as you have your own cause to create change for and are not sitting back only complaining about the way you think things should be.

Great post. I have had many eye rolling moments with Oprah, and at other times I find some of her ideas spot on. This one is on the money. One of my big things is when people sit back and complain about the state of the country but then don’t vote. I don’t care who they vote for, but the idea that they haven’t voiced their opinions or made a choice, but then sit back and complain about it, that annoys me. I tell everyone if you don’t vote, don’t complain, I don’t want to hear it. Good luck with your work with the school lunch program.

AMEN!! Thank you and the creators of the Sensible School Lunch Facebook page. Some people want to make a difference but have no way of knowing how or in what direction to go. It takes good leadership to point them which way to go. I applaud you for being a leader for the cause. It gives the followers someone to look to for direction.
