Winter activities for kids (in the middle of no where)

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota, Small Town Sports Tagged With: North Dakota, prairie, rural life 5 Comments

When you live 90 miles from the rest of society, opportunities and activities at times can be limited. On the flip side limited opportunities allows participation for all when an opportunity is presented. For example, our son, age 14, throughout the year participates in just about anything offered at our small, rural school from sports to music to academic to drama to civic teams and clubs. There are no cuts in our school. Everyone makes the team.
But there aren’t teams for 4 year old children in our rural area. Miss E has been impatiently waiting to participate on some form of a team or in an activity since she could walk and talk. She takes her brother to practice with me, picks him up and has probably already been to 100 games in her lifetime.

Winter is especially important for our kids to have activity I think because our weather is cold and they aren’t outside like summer and fall.
One month into being age 4, Miss E has started Tae Kwon Do one night a week. She is the youngest and most inexperienced.

But she wants to be a part of a team. She loves her “practice” she now has of her own. She also loves her 2 year old little sister, Miss A, is too young to attend, announcing to Miss A that “maybe when I’m 6 years old and you’re 4, you might get to come my Tae Kwan Do.” Miss A said “Mama, you come to my bahsaball (basketball) and Ebee (nickname for Miss E) stays home.” I’m sensing a fierce competitive streak in both girls.

For now, Tae Kwon Do is Miss E’s very own activity. If you ask her about it, she’ll invite to come watch her. Although she might not know what she is doing, she doesn’t know that and she is willing to try anything.

She is proud and so are we. A bold child willing to step out into a big, new world with confidence and grace is what I want for each of our kids.
I’m also happy because Miss E is worn out and willingly goes to bed and sleeps all night after the past two weeks of Tae Kwon Do! We need more activities.
What do you do to stay active in the weather months and not get too stir crazy?

My husband took Tae Kwon Do for the majority of his childhood and started teaching it when he was 17. It’s a GREAT activity for children and I can’t wait until our daughter is old enough to start it!

My son was involved in TKD for several years and really enjoyed it. The girl has basketball in the winter and my son hunts every single chance he gets. He is just waiting for trap shooting to start back up again. Ironically we live 90 miles from the nearest “big city”. My husband came back from a business trip today and announced the airline had lost his luggage. Said they were going to deliver it when they found it, and I said…”All the way out here?” lol Hope you received just a tad bit of snow.

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
