What’s A Girl To Do? A Halloween Potty Training Lesson

Filed Under: Family Values Tagged With: family, family fun, holidays 8 Comments

What’s a girl to do on Halloween on the prairie?

Dressing up like Strawberry Shortcake, cowgirl style with boots and her sidekick a strawberry seemed like the thing to do yesterday.

Miss A was rocking her strawberry costume as a potty trained two year old. Her mama should have thought that through a little more but we were having so much fun.

Strawberry Shortcake and Miss Strawberry went to the local nursing home party where it was a scary tour through dark “dungeons” but plenty of friendly faces.

Then we stopped at Daddy’s office. Miss Strawberry was busy and refused to go to the bathroom. Mommy should have thought that through but we kept going.

The girls were all smiles with Daddy…and got plenty of hugs from Nana Carol and Grandpa Eldon.

We went home and quickly started eating sandwiches before setting out on our trick or treating adventure. The door bell rang. I was holding Miss Strawberry as our first friends came to the door. We treated them with lots of peanut-free candy for our peanut-free allergy friend and family. We waved farewell…and as I stood holding our sweet Strawberry a warm rush came down my side I was holding Miss Strawberry on my hip.
Miss Strawberry had an accident. Any thinking ahead mama should have had a Pull-Up diaper on her but instead our excited freshly trained potty trained Miss Strawberry now had a wet costume.
We quickly changed and cleaned up. I tried not to think of this as a “mom fail” but what’s a girl to do.
What’s a girl to do when your costume is ruined by 5:15PM and you have big plans ahead of you for the night?
You smile, reassure it’s all okay and think fast on your feet.
I once bought a Raggedy Ann costume for $2 on Ebay. I quickly found that on a shelf and we transitioned with out much pause.
Strawberry Shortcake went trick or treating with her little sister, Raggedy Anika.

Raggedy Anika wore a Pull Up and she was so happy in her costume, gathering sweets and treats from family and friends.

Strawberry Shortcake says this is what a girl does on the prairie: We just put one foot in front of the other and roll with the punches and lessons. The lesson learned on Halloween was for Mommy. When you live 97 miles from Wal-Mart, having a back up costumes is always a good plan. When you have a 2 year old trick or treating, it’s always best to wear a Pull Up diaper than counting on no accidents.
In case there was any question who our girls looked like…we just need to flash back to circa early 1980’s to know…
Miss Raggedy Anika looks a lot like Hot Wheels Auntie Lori and Daddy…and Miss E has a similar look to…me, her Strawberry Shortcake Mama of 1982.
Oh the lessons I’ve the learned since 1982!

We had similar nights. It’s great to go to the nursing home. I lights up so many eyes to see the kids in costumes. Our local nursing home also does a maze (made out of taped together appliance boxes) in the physical therapy room that the kids just love.

I did remember the pull-up, but Bud announced that he had to go while we were out which meant an emergency trip to Grandma’s house. You’re lucky you were home when it happened.

It’s a Halloween you’ll never forget now! It is also a reminder as to why I keep dragging my feet to potty train my 21 month old even though she is so ready.

Thanks for taking one for the team! Our non-potty trained, almost 3, ghost decided tonight was the night to wear big boy underwear. And would do nothing else. So we headed in town & made our first couple of stops when I remembered I had forgotten a pull-up or diaper! Donk! We kept going though & at one point he said “me go pee bad.” He needed to pee & did it without reminding! Sorry Miss Strawberry & thank you! I’m glad your mama had an extra costume…very cute!!

As a mama to a child with peanut allergies, I also want to say “THANK YOU” for accommodating your candy store! That was super-sweet of you!

Absolutely adorable! And of course it is a bonus to get to wear, not one, but two costumes! Thanks so much for sharing! (KUdos on the potty trained 2! Mine are 21 months and showing no signs!)

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
