A New Season & Winner

Filed Under: Life in North Dakota, Small Town Living Tagged With: athletics, family fun, prairie life, small town sports 4 Comments

I often wonder what I’ll do in life when there is a “slow down”. I think I’ll probably look back at these years as golden memories but right now there is no slow down in sight.

The only relative slow down was the past few weeks when there was a pause between sports seasons. Football ended in late October. During that time Hunter practiced piano for his fall festival which was held this weekend. Above is Hunter with Mrs. Erbele, his teacher that patiently fits Hunter’s lesson into his school day so he can continue taking lessons. She also reads this blog. Thank you, Mrs Erbele for teaching our son to play piano! This was Hunter’s 5th piano festival since we moved to the prairie and he started lessons.

Not everyone loves piano festivals at our house. The girls stayed home with our friend Grace to play dolls, color and dress up as princesses. As you can see the new desk and pink chair are favorites in Miss E’s bedroom.

My parents and Nana Carol accompanied Nathan, Hunter and me to the festival. My dad looks like he is sleeping on this picture but I promise it was the best one of the bunch. To put into perspective how big our boy has gotten this fall…my dad is 6’8″ bare foot and is always wearing cowboy boots.
Hunter earned a Superior rating and his diligent piano practicing paid off.  I made him a big meal to celebrate including grilled pork spareribs, sweet potato casserole and Nana made a German heritage recipe of cheese buttons. We also enjoyed homemade tomato soup this weekend.
It’s a Pioneer Woman inspired recipe that I will share this week. I was reminded while traveling on business last week that I totally missed drawing the Real Farmwives and Gooseberry Patch giveaway last week for the Comfort Foods cookbook.

Drum roll…the winner is: Cindy B. of Georgia. Cindy, I’ll be sending you the Comfort Foods cookbook and will contact you by email for your mailing address.
What is the new season we are entering now that football and the piano festival are complete? Hunter has qualified for State Drama with his one-act play team that is coming up next week. But today…a new chapter and season kicks off in our lives and one that Hunter has dreamed of and practiced for year round…
Who is this man and where is my son?

High School basketball season.
He’s only an 8th grader but his deepest love is basketball and the high school coaches have given him an opportunity to play. He’ll start practice today and see where it leads. His uniform is already broken in though because he wore it around the house this weekend…just to warm up for the new season.
I have a journey of whirlwind work travel to conquer now and am under the weather with aches, chills and a stuffy nose. I’ve doctored myself with plenty of sleep and tea and hope to be recover sooner than later. It’s a new season! I don’t have time for a cold and the flu.

What’s the “new” in your life these days?

Beautiful update on your family life.

You are busy, but I am guessing you love every moment.

It’s funny, but I don’t think life ever slows down. I thought after sister and I graduated from college and moved out Mom and Dad’s life would slow down. I think they are busier than when we were home and showing livestock!

Hope you are feeling better and ready to take on the week. Have a good one!

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
