Namesake birthday wishes on the prairie

Filed Under: Family Values, Life in North Dakota Tagged With: birthdays, family, milestones, prairie life 10 Comments

Miss A’s has a double middle name as do all of our children. But how we chose her first name was how it would sound with what we knew would be her first middle name, Iris. She is named after a very special lady, our great-great aunt, Iris, my late great-grandfather’s sister. Today after church we called our very special aunt and Miss A proudly sang loudly into the phone…

“Happy Birthday to you. Happy Birthday dear Iris. Happy Birthday to you.” Miss A belted it out louder than any of us and Iris was tickled to hear all the kids sing. It’s unique that our children have multi-generations of family they know and are raised around on the North Dakota prairie.

And even more unique? Iris is 106 years old today. She is truly a blessing, a delight, a true pioneer and gifted woman that our children have memories with that will last a lifetime.

Iris set a high bar in our family for education, generosity, dignity, class, beauty, faith, loyalty and love. And no matter where life takes Miss A, she’ll always have the memories and stories of her now 106 year old namesake to learn to live by while blazing her own trail on the prairie.

Do you have a special namesake/ story for you or your children?

My youngest daughter has the same middle name as her Grandma (my husbands mother). My granddaughters name is Emma after my mother, Emmalean. My aunts and uncle say Ms Emma acts the same way my momma did when she was younger..hard headed!
Happy Birthday to Ms Iris! How exciting to have so many generations for you and your children to grow up with!

106… wow… and how cute of your daughter to sing to her!

Was sent over here by Everyday Epistle after finding her on the Freshly Pressed page of WordPress.

It’s always nice to meet another Dakotan!

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
