Wordful Wednesday from Miss E: Onions Make Me Cry

Filed Under: Misc. Tagged With: wordless Wednesday 6 Comments

“Do onions make you cry, Mama?”
“Yes, E, they make me really cry.”
“Here let me help you. I’ll wear your onion goggles. They don’t make me cry. I’m big already.”

“Mama, onions make me cry and they give me a headache!”
“I’m eating a vitamin now that gets rid of my onion headache.”
The vitamin looks very similar to a banana flavored Laffy Taffy she received from a little friend as a Valentine’s Day treat. So the next time onions make you cry and give you a headache? Skip the onion goggles. Go straight for the Laffy Taffy.

Seriously, onions make me sob in the kitchen and yet I love cooking with them. Any tips for me that don’t include my children embarking on dicing onions?

Okay, the only thing that I’ve heard of that works is to breathe through your mouth only….I haven’t been able to accomplish this myself yet though:)

Cute photo’s. Leave the cold water running in the sink while chopping onions and rinse your hands in the running water several times while chopping. Has worked for me for years. Remove the onion smell from your hands with fresh lemon juice or by running your hands along the side of a stainless steel knife. I don’t know why it works!

Miss E: Explain to your Mom that sometimes you have to let others do that kind of work. Since I’m now a Grandma, I go to the store and purchase diced onions. They are from Gill’s Onions in Oxnard CA. Your Mom was in town last week. It might cost a little more but it stops 99% of the crying.

I also use the cold water trick when working with onions. My mom did the same thing.

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
