Decorating An Easter Tree

Filed Under: Family Values Tagged With: decorate an Easter Tree, Easter, faith, family, holidays 7 Comments

Tomorrow is Ash Wednesday and Lenten season kicks off. It leads to Easter. On the frozen, snowy prairie, it seems like the dead of winter right now. But the thought of Easter brings me hope of budding trees, crocuses, tulips, tractors, seeding and planting on the prairie.
In our Christian faith, the season of Lent and then the Easter celebration is the single most important time of remembrance, reflection, honor and celebration.
So what as a mom can I teach a 3 year old and 1 year old about Easter?
I am not a super mom. They won’t have Bible scripture memorized. But I at least want them to know something about Easter.
So what do I turn to?
Commercialized Easter.
How about decorate an Easter tree?
We kept up Miss E’s pink Christmas tree up in her room and removed all Christmas decor.
From Oriental Trading for just a few dollars I ordered a box of foam egg decorations.
The girls and I decorated the tree with the egg decorations.
The Easter tree has extra flare with a beaded letter for each of the kids’ first names.
The very marked down pink glitter star from Target adorns the top. Ideally, I would like an Easter cross for the tree topper instead of a star. We’ll work on finding that deal.
Miss E (with a very chapped upper lip from her cold) is thrilled with her tree. In the upcoming weeks in Sunday School, we are going to make several decorations during Lent and for Easter that will decorate the tree. I ordered several Easter crafts from Oriental Trading. They will give a Christian message and meaning to the tree’s decor. Maybe a bit will stick in our 3 year old’s mind.
Miss A probably won’t get any of the Easter messages this year. Other than “no touch” which is what she is aware of with the egg ornaments. Regardless, we have an Easter tree.
Do you decorate around your house in spring decor and specifically for Easter? Share your ideas.

We had a tree when we were little too, but it wasn’t really a tree it was a branch off of a tree. I don’t know what the name of that tree was but it had a special meaning. I loved to put little eggs and chickens in that branch with my sister!

Even if it is the more commercialized side of Easter, what a great memory they’ll have of this fun project. 🙂

I usually decorate with Ukrainian pysanky eggs… though this year they’re at the library since I’ll be doing a class on it. Cute idea for your girls!

A wonderful idea for the girls. As they get older and understand more about the Lenten season you can add other items. Good job Mom!

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
