Nathan and his mini-me Valentine, Anika Iris…with a lot of sweet potatoes on her face
We had an early Saturday night Valentine’s dinner with Nathan’s parents. The restaurant is locally owned by a couple originally from Brazil. We had yummy Brazilian BBQ which is heavy on every type of meat, roasted on skewers over a wood fire. It was extraordinary…especially considering it was in the middle of nowhere on the prairie, far far from Brazil. A fun Valentine’s weekend treat.
E and I spent Saturday morning making homemade Valentine’s. During that project she became obsessed with glue. She woke this morning asking me for glue. We’ll be doing all sorts of projects now involving glue!
Anika and Elissa wore their matching sweaters to dinner. We didn’t wear our family of matching sweaters because Hunter was missing. He was playing three evening tournament games in Minnesota with his team. They won the championship and today our friend Kathie (the coach’s wife) drove Hunter the entire trek back to our house with Hunter. We saved some Valentine’s candy and treats for Hunter. Miss E worked sharing those treats with Hunter. Not easy to share when you are two. Nathan of course thought ahead and bought cards and candy for the kids and me. I also received the so romantic gift of new jeans from my hubby. He knows what I need and like. I was thrilled. I was just trying to be a frugalista and was taking tips from the Happy Housewife’s frugal Valentine’s tips and passed on gifts this year. But I let Nathan sleep this morning while I made coffee and wrote him a sweet Valentine’s message …a frugal but thoughtful gift. Coffee and a handwritten note.
(My father is chuckling at the mere suggestion I am frugal…but I am working on that aspect on my life. Note…my sweater that I was wearing the below picture was $7 at TJ Maxx…I do love being frugal.)

E had “mac and cheese and red jello” (quite a kids meal selection…she was very happy!) for her gourmet dinner at the restaurant on Saturday night. No Brazilian BBQ. She was fascinated in watching it all happen though and make sure she spread her love around by getting up often for a tour of the restaurant or to go to the bathroom. She is 99.9% potty trained. She is perfect on the weekends with us but has a tougher time at daycare with it. It is hit or miss. When she has an accident she says “Oh I never do dat again!” and when she has big success in the toilet she says “Oh mommy you gonna be so happy!”
Indeed happiness comes in all forms.

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
