Homecoming parade

Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Our local homecoming parade was last Friday afternoon. We actually had a warm week and it finally felt like summer…only it was short lived because it is September and the cool air arrived this week on the prairie. But we loved our few weeks of summer in September! Elizabeth had an early nap and was ready to watch Hunter in his parade debut. One advantage of a small school in a small town is…
when you are a sixth grader you can march with the band in the homecoming parade! Hunter is laughing on this picture and tried so hard not to look at me as they passed by. But he broke into a smile as Elizabeth yelled at him and he saw me with my camera snapping pictures of him. Hunter is far in the back center of the photo, squinting and grimacing, holding in any form of acknowledgement of his family, trying to be a cool and calm band member . And aren’t the “uniforms” hilarious? Clearly it was too hot to wear their jackets so anything royal blue was acceptable. Hunter said they ended up being a “walking band” not a “marching band”. Either way, it was fun to hear and see them.

A couple days prior I was doing one of my least favorite activities, folding socks, standing in our bedroom with Anika laying on the bed kicking away, E was napping and in the distance I could hear the “Notre Dame Victory March” playing. I opened the window and let the band practice sounds come clearly through and called my mom. I put the phone on speaker so she could hear it too. Folding socks was a lot more entertaining with the band practice in the background. There is another instrument being played in our home other than Hunter on his trumpet and piano. Nathan has been playing his trombone again. For those of you who do not know, Nathan played his trombone for years and years and became an accomplished musician with it. He is playing this Sunday in church and again in a few weeks for a Concordia College concert band reunion event. Yes he is a band boy and I used to make fun of band boys. But that ended when I met the best band boy in the world and married him!

The homecoming parade included many floats created by the classes at the school. Each junior high and high school class has their own float plus numerous businesses and churches have floats. Small town parades always include horses and tractors too!

Gma Carol and I were worn out collecting all the candy that was thrown into the street by Elizabeth and Anika. E did not mind watching the parade and watching us chase down the candy. She tried about six different flavors of “duckers” (suckers). She never finished one, just a few licks and was onto the next flavor.

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
