Early weekday mornings

On the northern plains in the summer months we have daylight from 5AM until 10:30PM. As fall arrives, we have shorter days. It is harvest and each morning smells like fresh harvested grain in combination with alfafa from the hay. The sun rises and comes through into our kitchen and living room.
Early each morning our middle child awakes. Today it was at 4:58AM. Thankfully her daddy persuaded her to sleep until after 6AM. Then they get up together and she rips apart our bathroom as Nathan gets ready for the day. They eat breakfast together as I stumble to the coffee pot to get my needed cup of energy. When Nathan leaves for work shortly before 7AM, E and I go out to the deck to wave “buh bye” to him. This occurs on ALL mornings whether it is raining or snowing. But today is an especially beautiful morning with sunshine and a little fog.

As much as Hunter loves to hit his snooze button on his alarm clock, he is out the door already this morning because of early morning basketball practice. He and his team experienced yet another one point basketball game loss last night. Hunter iced both a knee and ankle last night and is a little stiff this morning. But it is Homecoming week at our little school so he will shake off the loss and stiff legs and get ready to march with the band this afternoon in the Homecoming parade. Elizabeth was practicing her march today and saying “Hunter! Trumpet! March!!!”
Through the fog, Hunter is off on his bike to basketball practice and then to school. We love our early mornings together. Eventually Anika will join us in our morning routine but for now she enjoys sleeping in until mid-morning!

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
