The making of nineteen pies

Filed Under: Dessert Tagged With: baking, pies 4 Comments

From yesterday morning

to this morning

my mother made

nineteen homemade pies.

First came the fruit pies yesterday. Off the top of my head…Apricot, Juneberry, Blueberry, Pineapple, Rhubarb Strawberry, Rhubarb Raspberry, Peach, French Apple, Pumpkin, Sour Cream Raisin, Pecan and others. Plus Grandma Nola brought over Strawberry Pie today. Also this morning my mom made a couple of cream pies like Banana Cream, Coconut Cream and a Lemon Meringue.

Prize winning cherry pie. My mom still makes her cherry pie just as she did when she was a teenager winning grand champion at the county fair.

Then sixty people showed up on our annual farm tour and devoured a majority of the pie this afternoon. My sister’s farm blog (link in right column) will document the farm tour in detail but I wanted to capture the pie baking preparations.

Pie baking is an art. Home made crusts and fillings. Nothing frozen, no mixes. Fresh ingredients. A home filled with fresh baking pie smell is like no other. My mom has a talent that she learned from her mother and thankfully she shares her art and talent of pie baking with all of us to enjoy. Hopefully I can learn from my mom to bake pies and my son and daughters will do the same from me. I can make pie…just not 19 pies in 24 hours. I tend to buy frozen pre-made crusts and need to start using my rolling pin a little more often if I am ever going to come close to my mother’s ability.

I am not undertaking post pregnancy dieting until Anika is six weeks old and beyond which gave me the go ahead to eat coconut cream pie this afternoon, pecan pie for supper and nibble and taste Juneberry, French Apple, Peach, Rhubarb Raspberry and Pineapple pies. Plus there is one piece of Lemon Meringue right now that is calling my name as a bed time snack.

Wow! I can’t believe she has 19 pie pans!! That alone is impressive. The lattice top on the cherry pie is beautiful. What a fun tradition!

I am drooling as I am looking at all of these wonderful pictures. What is your mom’s secret to a perfect crust?

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
