Plenty more weeks of winter

Filed Under: Uncategorized Leave a Comment

Gma Nola was here for a few days, then off to Phoenix with me to stay with her sister and then back with us for a couple more days. After her week away, she is happy to be home at the farm tonight, getting back into her routine. But I know she enjoyed the warm Arizona weather, shopping and fun with her sister and we certainly loved having her here with us. (Nathan and Hunter have clean laundry tonight thanks to Grandma’s work today!)
While I was in Phoenix, I got away for couple hours to visit my friend Lora and got to hold her sweet new baby Tommy. Lora and I grew up together through our parents who had been friends since college days. I actually remember helping Lora’s mom change her diaper. I also remember sporting matching hot pink leopard print swimming suits when we were young girls. Years later, Lora and I worked together at UND and then she lived with Hunter and me in Fargo. Then of all things she married Joe, who I grew up with while throwing together in the Quicksilver Track Club. Joe and I traveled many miles by bus and plane going to track meets together and spent countless hours fundraising for those trips. Anybody remember me selling Italian Moon gift certificates? To see Lora and Joe now married with sweet baby Tommy was so much fun.
In North Dakota, there will be no groundhogs popping their head out of the ground any time soon. Spring is not just around the corner or even in six weeks. I think for some comfort I will re-read Laura Ingalls Wilder’s Long Winter. Elizabeth’s winter afternoon entertainment this past weekend was standing in a comfy sitting chair next to the window, watching Nathan and Hunter get out the snowmobiles. Then after they left she went to other windows to figure out where they were. She is always on the move and only quiet when she is asleep. I just do not know where she gets this personality?

Last week while I was away, my parents came for a night to visit the kids and Nathan. With them, they brought our old snowmobile from the farm. It’s probably considered “vintage” but Nathan and I consider it the most safe machine for Hunter to be riding and is a much appreciated gift and addition to our snowmobile “fleet”. It’s not huge, not too fast and Hunter is happy. Nathan snapped the below picture from our deck door when Hunter first took the sled out with his friends. Too cute. They all got off and inspected it–and named it the “Wicked Beast”.
In the above picture you also will see the random car and hay baler left in the field across the way from our house. I do not know why the local farmer decided to leave his car there for the winter. It was probably dead and then snowed. Regardless it annoys me. Enough said.

Welcome to the Prairie…

I am a mom of three kids and a wife to Nathan. Together we live on the North Dakota prairie, 97 miles from a Starbuck's. I share about family, food, farming and the prairie that I love. I used to commute 98 miles one-way to work but it required too much coffee. So now I am home, consulting, speaking, writing and primarily, juggling family life.
