Hunter’s baseball team won the league championship on Saturday. After spending a week at Cooperstown Bible Camp, Hunter was a little anxious about playing because he had missed practices but quickly was calmed when he had a hit and scored in the first game. Games were at 9AM, 10:30AM and 3PM and it got more windy with each game. Grandma Carol stayed home with Baby Elissa as she would not have done well in the wind but Grandpa Fred, Mama Jane, Uncle Joe, Auntie Kirsti, Mike, Nathan and I were all there to see Hunter’s first in-the-park home run which the pictures show. They were playing Gackle in that game…which as you can see in the pictures had big boys and girls playing in their jeans…true small town baseball. Their catcher was 12 years old and about Nathan’s size. We were worried a bit about his little chest protector not really protecting him. In the championship, Wishek played Napoleon. We were leading 8-0 in the last inning with two outs when Napoleon scored four runs but finally they got their last out and we won 8-4.
Following the league tournament we were at our local county fair. Hunter was on the new rides purchased by the fair board (no more Carnies!) and Nathan went up to the “Sports Boosters” building to buy a greasy burger. And there hanging on the outside of the order window was a printed team picture of the boys and their trophy. This was just a few hours after winning. It was fun to see how proud everyone is of even the “pee wee” baseball team.
