Crock-Pot Applesauce Recipe

It’s time for easy applesauce making, using a Crock-Pot! I don’t have a fruit bearing tree in our prairie, former hay-field, yard. Someday. But thankfully I have friends who share apples like my friend Sonia did. And I have don’t have hours to delicately prepare apple recipes. Thankfully I have friends who tweet about easy apple recipes. My friend Emily of Zweber Farms (where we order our pork from, check them out here) mentioned that she was filling a Crock Pot full of apples and within hours she would have apple sauce. That simple idea had never hit me before but I ran with it. Crock-Pot Apple Sauce. Brilliant!

The only problem I have with even easy apple recipes? I strongly dislike peeling apples. I found with an apple peeler (thanks Grandma or was it Mom that knew I needed this gadget?) and a well-trained 4 year old, apples get peeled.

You can use any combination of peeled and cored apples. Ours were cut into rings, thanks to the apple peeler gadget. Yours can be in chunks. However you feel like slicing, or training your child to do it for you.

Miss E and I filled a 5 quart Crock Pot with apples.

  1. Crock Pot Applesauce Recipe
  2. 18-20 apples, peeled and cored
  3. 3 cups of water
  4. 1 TBSP. Cinnamon (We recommend at least 1 TBSP and any cinnamon will do but Penzey's is our absolute favorite.)
  5. 1 TBSP. lemon juice
  6. 1/2 cup brown sugar
  7. Optional: add 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of caramel bits
  1. Core and peel 18-20 apples. Place into slow cooker. Pour lemon juice across apples. Sprinkle in brown sugar, cinnamon and optional caramel bits. Stir and cover. Slow cook on low for 8-10 hours or on high for 4-5 hours. Stir and serve!

Splash lemon juice over apples. Sprinkle in cinnamon and sugar. And even add a few caramel bits if you would like!

Serve warm over ice cream. Serve chilled as a side dish. Fill a bowl and eat it. Fill jars and place them in a water bath canner to save for winter. However you’d like, enjoy.

Our first ever batch of Crock Pot Applesauce was a raging success. Our applesauce was extremely dark in color because Miss E dumped in cinnamon but we added very little sugar and the flavor was excellent. Our teenager, Hunter said it looked like chili. But it tasted divine. We ate the WHOLE BATCH at our Sunday night family supper. We served it with squash just picked from the garden that we roasted in the oven and baked lemon pepper chicken breasts.

The entire meal tasted like Fall to me! The shared apples from friend Sonia are gone. The next apples a friend shares are going to another batch of Crock Pot Applesauce and then maybe onto Crock Pot Apple Butter.

  1. I have never tried making it in a crockpot. In NY, we have tons of apples and I will go picking on vacation next week. I will try this for sure! I love Penzey’s spices. I used to order online, but now they opened a shop on Long Island. Hubby knows when I go there it will be at least an hr of looking and smelling etc. He now understands my need for 4 different cinnamons..Ha.

  3. This is my favorite applesauce recipe, but I add cinnamon red hots to it instead of cinnamon and sugar. It makes it a very pretty red color. I sometimes add some sugar to it depending on the kind of apples that I have used.
